Melanie.

I can’t wait for my little niece to be born. My sister in law is due October 15ish…We had her baby shower today. So much running around, I don’t know where to begin. Have you ever carried those big backyard umbrellas by yourself? those things are HEAVY!!! I almost crushed my little toe trying to carry them out to the backyard!! Luckily didn’t, and was able to set up for the party. We (and I mean my Sister and I) went with a neutral, clean, and simple look. White table cloths, napkins, umbrellas, chairs, and blended in a bit of green to mix it up. We hung baby clothes with pins from the umbrellas in different colors, but it seemed to work okay.

Never in my life have I seen grown men in bibs, being fed baby food from jars…hilarious. For those who don’t know the game, you get a husband to sit in the chair, with a bib on (apparently you can get the disposable ones in toddler sizes that work great, just so you know) and the wives hold the jars of baby food, and try to feed the husbands….the kicker is that they are blindfolded while doing so!! Oh, and they only have one minute to try to finish the jar…haha, I felt really bad for the husbands though, sheer embarrassment. I mean, I know it’s all in good fun, but nothing like smashed up bananas dripping down your chin while others laugh at you.

…the musical chairs game was fun…yes…we played musical chairs. It was fun, I’ll admit, until I had a bigger guy try to sit on me, and almost squash my liver right out of me. :(

anyway, getting to the crafty part… I made Melanie (my unborn niece) a cute little Kimono from Heather Ross’ Weekend Sewing. *Lucy’s Kimono (<that link will take you to corrections in the book [scroll down], that made me pause a few minutes, and evaluate my work…it would have made it easier for me, and I should have “googled” it first!, but such is life. you will run into these problems as they are typos!!)

Kimono

I really love this vintage fabric…not like you can’t tell. I’ve made three clothing items with this fabric alone! :)

Another item that I have crafted is this little nifty thing:

Marker Holder

…if you’re still trying to figure out what it is…lol. It’s a marker holder,  I got the idea from “the artful parent”. (thanks Jean! ;) ) Taylor loves this thing, we’ve even managed to take it out to one of Richie’s softball games, she sat for a few minutes coloring her elmo book, I just love how enthralled she becomes…only did it for a few minutes though, because she was too busy catching up with her little girl friend…hehe. They are so cute together…

alright, that’s all for now!

I’m back…

Or so I hope to be soon. I have been M.I.A.  for quite a while, busy doing day-to-day routines, keeping Taylor busy. A few new things:

  •  Taylor starts her Co-op Preschool soon. I am so excited, for one, getting back into the groove of things, I love seeing all the kiddos and Mommies, and it’s always nice to know that your child isn’t the only one screaming at the tops of her lungs whenever she doesn’t get her way…a nice reminder that it’s all normal behaviour for a two year old is in constant need over at our place. Seriously, some days I soak in the tub for hours once Richie gets home…
  • I haven’t really been crafting. There have been projects here or there, but nothing too big. I’ll see if I can find some pictures…

Blue Dress

(This cute dress was an old shirt of mine, I used this tute on Jessica’s blog, ”oh so happy together”, ((what a cool blog!))  it’s super easy, and so cute!)

(A little grainy because it was taken with my camera phone..(darn it!)…but this is a work in progress, I still have to make the clothespin doll a dress, and put everything on a wooden board platform, will show pics when it’s done. )

  • Been listening to some new music, and I’m TOTALLY jocking Band of Horses right now. Their Cease to Begin album is amazing…been playing that in the car over and over again… I carefully look into the rear view mirror to look at Tay, and it’s so cute, she’s secretly rocking out as well, bobbing her head up and down. I don’t know why but she gets sort of embarrassed when I catch her in these moments…the cutest thing ever though.

My favorite song on the album. :)

(will get back to this…must. get. some. sleep…apparently, am the only one who stays up past midnight browsing through different blogs, drooling over craft projects!)

Elmo 2nd Bday Party!

new apron for Tay

(above: Tay in her new apron I made her with some of the superbuzzy fabric I had left over)

What a crazy, busy weekend it has been for us. Our little baby is no longer a baby!!! I can’t believe she is TWO years old!! Man, it’s true when they say that time flies… it’s no joke. I still remember taking her home from the hospital. This weekend we had her second birthday party at Lemos Farm… She had so much fun, and it looked like so did the party guests!  We did an Elmo party…Here are some pictures from this weekend:

some close ups of the party ideas:

elmo napkin ties

Elmo Napkin Rings, with stamped Elmo, tied with some string. These were SO cute!

goodie bags

Goodies, in colored paper bags, tied with twine, and for added color, the same elmo tags as the napkin ties. Inside these bags: a rubber duckie, some stickers, a thing of crayons, small bugs, a small toy car, a bag of cookies, a small box of raisins, and some lolipops. Along with the goodie bags, the kids took home an elmo coloring book:

coloring booksthat were laid out on paper spread across the picnic table. Nearby were tins full of crayons, and decorating the table we a few of Tay’s elmo stuffies and elmo books. A cheap way of decorating, I’d say…and the kids played with some of the toys on the table, so it was a hit! :)

feel free to take some ideas!! I hope you have a great Elmo Party!! just let me know if you are going to be using some of my ideas! I’d love to hear from you out there!! ;) What are some of your favorite cost effective party ideas?

summer tops…

Hey everyone…been a while. It’s been getting terribly hot in our area recently, and I have been enjoying the weather, don’t get me wrong, but it seems as though Tay doesn’t have very many summer tops…(we’ll have to go shopping for some soon!!) So…in the meanwhile, I made this one for her:

Top (front)I used an old 80’s simplicity pattern, and just re-vamped it a bit, by adding a pleat in the front, and then smocking a little in the back, (since the smallest size on the pattern was a toddler 4, I knew I had to make some adjustments)

Smocked BackIt came out okay, it was my first time using Bias Tape for the arm and necklines… and it fits perfectly over another Tee, and some jeans.. so cute! This Japanese fabric was actually a GREAT find at a yard sale for $1.00, and I used some bias tape I had lying around… the pattern was also from the yard sale and cost me .10 cents! and I have plenty of the Japanese fabric left over as well!! That I’m going to turn into a smocked top.. :)

I am also working on an Apron for a friend… she wanted it to be green, but I went with this fabric (that had some green in it):

I hope she likes it.. I’ve decided to make it from Heather Ross’ pattern, from Weekend Sewing…( can you tell I LOVE that book?)

will be back to post the process! :)

and HOORAY!! I just bought this Japanese pattern book on Etsy:

It’s the Cucito Toddler Summer 09 Book… so, I hope I get it soon, so I can make some real cute dresses for Tay.. here are some more patterns in the book:

any of you make anything from a Japanese pattern book before? I mean, I wont be able to read it, but I figure the illustrations will suffice… here’s to hoping anyway! ;)

Following along with Sew Mama Sew, today I will be talking about my sewing machine. It was actually a christmas present from Richie last year, so I haven’t had it for very long, and it’s sort of inexpensive, but has held up great for the last 6 months! Here’s a Q&A from SMS:

Singer Tradition Beginners Machine

What brand and model do you have? Singer Tradition

How long have you had it? 6 months

How much does that machine cost (approximately)? I wouldn’t know unless I google it real quick: like $110.00

What types of things do you sew (i.e. quilting, clothing, handbags, home dec projects, etc.)? I sew play things for my daughter, clothes, baby quilts, dolls, bags, gifts.

How much do you sew? How much wear and tear does the machine get? I sew at least twice a week, or more. since I’m still a newbie, I’d like to think that I pace my machine! lol

Do you like/love/hate your machine? Are you ambivalent? Passionate? Does she have a name? I am okay with it. Since I didn’t choose it, I really have no say.. I mean, it’s held up, but it probably wouldn’t have been my first choice. I really wanted a Brother. Nope, no name yet! lol

What features does your machine have that work well for you? It has a 4 step buttonhole maker that I love, so easy, and it has a few stitch features, but doesn’t have very many cool features.

Is there anything that drives you nuts about your machine? yes, maybe it’s because I don’t really know how to use it, but my thread always snaps in the middle of my project. do you think it’s the tension? I’ve never taken any classes, so I think I have to read up on the basics… I sort of jumped into it thinking I would just learn from trial and error. but this error keeps repeating itself!!! :(

Do you have a great story to share about your machine (i.e., Found it under the Christmas tree? Dropped it on the kitchen floor? Sewed your fingernail to your zipper?, Got it from your Great Grandma?, etc.!)? We want to hear it!

Yes, this sewing machine was actually a gift from my hubby. I have always wanted to start being a little more crafty. I would see craft magazines, or go to fairs where we would see baby clothes, and quilts hanging for sale.. and I would think to myself, “If only I had a sewing machine, because these designs look fairly easy to make!”  well,  for months I had been dropping hints that I wanted one…come Christmas eve (when we exchange gifts) I got some gift certificates and a few kitchen items…no sewing machine! I was kinda sad, cause I thought for sure he had picked up on the hints, i mean, we would walk into a fabric store and spend a few minutes looking at patterns, fabric and even sewing machines!! lol.. so I thought, well then I guess I can just choose mine later! Well, Christmas morning, I get up to make breakfast for the hubby and the child, and notice there is a huge box under the tree, that hadn’t been there last night… immediately I knew it was the sewing machine! what a great surprise… he definitely changed the rules a bit, but that didn’t matter! I was so excited! my first real sewing machine project was the little waldorf style doll I posted earlier this year…. I love my sewing machine, and even though it’s not my first choice, it will always be my first gifted one from my hubby!! which makes it even more special!

Would you recommend the machine to others? Why? for beginners, sure! haven’t taken any classes, it was real easy to pick up and just start sewing!

What factors do you think are important to consider when looking for a new machine? I think I would have gone with a computerized one, with some embroidery, or even some hemming detail available, since I like to keep things nice and clean!

Do you have a dream machine? I really loved project runway, and I know it’s probably just a gimmick, ( I wonder if it’s any good!), but I’ve always wanted the special edition, Brother, the one’s they used on Project Runway. I think it’s like $1500.00 or something like that..

We had so much fun at Lemos Farm (again) to celebrate a 2nd birthday for one of Tay’s friends. We rode the train, petted the goats, fed the goats, saw the chickens, rode a pony, went on a Hay ride, had some cake… what a fun filled morning!

Smocked Dress…

side view of smocked dress

While Tay napped today, I decided to take that time and whip up that little smocked dress I’ve been dying to make for her. The pattern is in Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross… It a fairly simple dress to make, I think I got it done in about an hour…with time leftover for Mua! lol

smocked Dress back

I might have her wear this for her Birthday… I want to make matching bloomers with the 3/4 yard of fabric I have left over. I think Amy Karol has a pattern for bloomers in her book… so fun!!!

picking flowers

that’s all for now… will be back to post pictures from Lemos farm (tomorrow’s birthday party).. that should be loads of fun, and can’t wait!

So, we are invited to a little man’s 2nd bday party this weekend… I don’t want to spoil the surprise, so I wont name him, but I think it’s okay if I share what I made for him:

Crayon Roll

this real cute travel art case!! The Crayon roll is super easy to make, and really cute…I got the Idea from “Skip to My Lou”, who has this tute on her website!! (thanks Cindy!!) I used fusible vinyl on the inside pockets so the crayons wont mark up the cloth when they go into their slots. and also used a cute train/car/boat fabric I picked up earlier last week. The special little guy adores trains so hopefully he wont mind the “other’ vehicles on the print! lol.

I also made this little number for the lucky birthday boy…this pattern is called “swing swing Smock” that is in Amy Karol’s book “Bend the Rules: Sewing”.

art smock( I know the name on the tin definitely gives it away! which by the way, doesn’t look so hot in a picture, I may have to fix that! lol)

Here’s Taylor Modeling it for me.. I have to make her one, she LOVED the big pocket and kept filling it with crayons!

Taylor with Smock on

in other news, I can’t believe my baby is 23 months old!! (as of Tuesday), she is getting so big! I have to really start getting things together for her party, picking up the rest of the party supplies should be fun!! I also have to send out her Bday invitations, hopefully I will get around to it this weekend! :) I can’t wait for Tay’s party, I hope she has a good time!

anyways, that’s all for now… time for Mama to catch up on some laundry! ;)
